![]() Now, the chart gives a full 5 points in each category to one character only: Netero. Mind/Spirit - Skill/Technique - Body - Nen - Wild Card Factor - Fluid Intelligence Having done just that, I believe that the most intuitive way to translate those categories are as such: Therefore we kind of have to run before we walk and analyze the stats first before understanding the categories. Both "knowledge" and "intelligence" can be acceptable translations, even though they can be vastly different in meaning.ĭue to the lack of explanation on the Japanese categories (as far as I am aware of), there is no way to judge the accuracy of either translation, unless we try to extrapolate from the stats given. For example, 知 can be short for 知識 (knowledge) or 知性 (intelligence) or 知恵 (wisdom). ![]() The problem is that, with the exception of 念 (Nen) which has a special meaning in the context of HxH, the single kanji of each category have very broad meanings, and they can stand for different words. The Wiki uses the following translation: Spirit - Skill - Strength - Nen - Talent - Intelligence The table in the aforementioned thread uses this translation: Mind - Skill - Stamina - Aura - Ingenuity - Knowledge The Japanese version, clockwise from the top of the hexagon: 心 技 体 念 奇 知 So let's start by defining the categories. The categories in Japanese are represented by a single kanji each, which can be ambiguous as they may stand for different phrases with different meanings/nuances. Instead of using our perception of characters' powers to disprove this chart, I propose that we use what we know to prove this chart, and then infer the author's intentions to understand what we don't know about other characters.Ī major obstacle in understanding this chart for the fandom is, in my opinion, vague or inaccurate translations of what is already a set of very vague categories. I believe that, therefore, we should first discard our skepticism of this chart as influenced by our own headcanons and tier lists. In short, what we have here is not a "power ranking," but a "character ranking." It measures how developed a character is on six different categories, admittedly arbitrarily picked without any distinguishable criteria (to me at least). Rather, I believe that it is as close to a "word of God" as we get about the characters' inherent value. when evaluating this supposed "power." In fact, when you look at the categories, and not just the "total sum," you will see that this chart is not supposed to be a power ranking. Even then, some categories are very vague, and it is unclear if the chart factors in a character's speed, durability, physical strength, etc. However, if you take a look at the categories (more on that later), it is soon apparent that only three out of six are useful metrics for a conventional "power level" system. ![]() ![]() Conventional wisdom tells us that Zushi will beat Komugi in a battle 100% of the time, unless you take the fight to a Gungi board. In this chart, blind girl Komugi is a whole 5 points above Zushi, the child fighter that made his way up Heaven's Arena. Usually, the criticism manifests itself as this question: "Why is character A higher than character B?" The implication being, of course, that the critic believes character B is stronger than character A. The most common response with which people dismiss this chart entirely seems to be given based on their own internalized perceptions of what power rankings in HxH should look like. The credibility of this chart has always been questioned by the fandom every time I see it mentioned. These stats can be seen on the character pages on HxH Wiki. Some characters have a different set of stats for each major arc, usually increasing in value with one exception: Knov. The stats are available in table form in the thread I linked above, although it only shows the characters' "latest" stats. I feel like taking on the challenge of clarifying the intent of the chart, and maybe shedding some light on why certain characters are rated such and such.įor those of you who are not familiar, the stats were taken from the hexagonal charts in each character's entry in the databook. A recent thread on this subject piqued my interest, particularly the fandom's general attitude toward the chart. As I am sure you are aware, there exists a list of official HxH character stats from the official databook.
